Tom founded Incomes and Legacies after decades of experience on both sides of the financial industry—working at Morgan Stanley leading up to and through the dot-com bubble and subsequent crash. He also joined the largest credit union in the world, Navy Federal, and helped grow and establish the northern Virginia investment and insurance division through the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recovery.
Two very different market cycles taught him the same lesson from opposite sides of the system: people do not just need cookie-cutter financial strategies—they need someone who understands how they think, feel, and make decisions about money.
That insight led him to the Financial Therapy Association and to becoming a Certified Financial Therapist™, part of a growing field focused on the emotional, behavioral, and relational dimensions of financial decision-making.
Through more than 10,000 one-on-one financial conversations, Tom saw a consistent pattern: conflicted advice, unnecessary complexity, and guidance that often looked more like sales than personalized, client-centered service. Beneath those surface issues was something deeper—money is not just math. It is emotional, relational, and deeply tied to identity, security, and freedom.
That realization matters most during one of the hardest transitions in financial life: moving from accumulation—building wealth—to distribution—turning savings into income, managing risk, and creating a lasting legacy.
